I don't want to give the impression that I don't hate this shit too, but jesus some of the comments on that Towleroad post. It's always depressing to see transparently euphemistic uses of the phrase kinda "African-American" pile up in the comment sections of the big gay blogs - of course I expect it here.

And I know Demetri Martin is kind of cute so you'd never expect this kind of thing, but I'm a lot less surprised by homophobic yuks coming from him than from [italic]that awful African-American[/italic] Shaq.

It's been a weird undercurrent in his precious, not-quite-funny schtick for as long as I've been paying attention to him Shaq is the only bad guy in this scenario because he played the "Gay sex is disgusting and they want to rape you" stereotype for laughs. In one of his Comedy Central standup specials, he lashes out at a guy who made him give a "faggy handshake."What does that mean? Because that's the only equivalent of a handshake we give out that's automatically "faggy."The thing you have to remember about ugly nerds is that they can be MORE homophobic than average people, because they are constantly teased and taunted with gay slurs for being wimpy nerds. he is smart and savvy but plays the lowest common demoninator because he thinks that where his audience is (...which is both condescending to them and self-condemning of himself)... Jerry Seinfeld discussing an episode in which his character was scripted to kiss Kramer (Michael Richards)...

It doesn't threaten their womanhood."Why is it that you never hear women pulling this shit when they have lesbian scenes? I clearly remember Dave asking Allison Janney in quite a leering, awkward way about what it was like being a straight woman and having to kiss Meryl Streep.

It's usually the contrary, they talk about how nice it was."Almost all of them talk about it being weird and having to get drunk before doing it. The only thing that's different is that the straight guys on the show start drooling instead of scooting away from the actress. Russell Crowe, Ewan Mac Gregor and Heath Ledger tackled their gay roles with aplomb and supreme confidence. He wets his pants and bloviates about his girlfriend. I'm just waiting for the day a mainstream talk show host asks a gay actor whether he or she was revulsed by having to kiss someone of the opposite sex and how they managed to make it through it without vomiting.

Other Jokes – This segment consists of other jokes about the topic that weren't included in the Opening Act.

New Expressions – In this segment Demetri is approached by a series of people that talk about different situations.MARTIN: And then, like eight takes later..keep doing it over and over again. It's usually the contrary, they talk about how nice it was.And it was weird cause it was like girlfriend, push her away, guy, oh yeah I want to kiss you, and then, okay girlfriend again... I'd love to see an A list actor do a gay scene and say, "It was actually really sexy". Now see-----this is when gays can show their power by simply refusing to see the film. Here's my rough transcript: MARTIN: There's a scene in the movie where I have to kiss a guy, where I have to make out with this guy. Ang [Lee], the director said, listen, in that scene you have to kiss a girl first, and then you push her away, and then you kiss the guy. So the day comes, and I'm kind of dreading it but I'm like my girlfriend will be there so that's cool. I kiss my girlfriend, I have to push push her away. I don't guy why Conan keeps doing this over and over. Surely he knows more about society having gone to Harvard and grown up quite comfortably. And then I have to go really make out with the guy in front of her. CONAN: The weirdness of doing this in front of your girlfriend. I was flipping the channels last night and I saw him doing that "comic" bit with that Jewish guy that he uses for gay jokes, which he did again last night. Why is it that you never hear women pulling this shit when they have lesbian scenes? The products are often comically impractical or unnecessary like the "Burning-Hand Potholder" featured in the Strategy episode.
