Alan is a chiropractor, the hapless father of Jake Harper, roommate, best friend and ex-husband of Walden Schmidt, and the surviving younger brother of Charlie Harper. According to Eric Tannenbaum, executive producer on the show, Alan Harper is loosely based on his real life friend Stephen Deane.

Alan is the only character who appears in every episode of the series.
